In 1989, NHL goalie Clint Malarchuk nearly died on the ice when his carotid artery and jugular were cut by a skate. Athletic trainer Jim Pizzutelli, a Vietnam War combat medic, saved his life by rushing onto the ice and pinch off the blood flow.
